Murcia, a shopping city

Murcia offers a wide variety of places to go shopping. You can find a multitude of shops and franchises with a very attractive and high quality commercial offer, as well as large shopping centres. Its establishments are so select that many of them have been distinguished with the Tourist Quality Commitment.

Shopping in the center of Murcia

The heart of the city is an ideal place to go shopping, as well as to stop along the way and enjoy a break in any of the dining establishments.

The names of the streets Platería, Trapería, Jabonerías, etc. tell us about the artisanal trade activity and an important commercial tradition that goes back to the Middle Ages and has continued over the years, making the urban center an ideal place for tourists, to go and enjoy the advantages of small shops, because of its closeness to visitors, its quality, its personalized treatment and its professionalism.

Calle Jabonerías is considered the "golden mile" for fashion shops and boutiques. In Trapería and Platería streets you can find everything from souvenir shops and typical souvenirs of the area to the latest trends in fashion, decoration and accessories. Visiting the crossroads of these shopping streets is one of the most recommended options to get lost and enjoy a day of shopping.

Shopping in the city is a good option for leisure and free time

Around the centre of Murcia is the traditional core of the city's commerce, where you can find everything from small shops to the best-known franchises of big brands.

In addition to the well-known commercial tradition of the triangle of the Trapería, Platería and Jabonerías, we must also highlight the large shopping area between the Gran Vía, the Avenida de la Libertad and the area around the El Corte Inglés shopping centre, where we can find a multitude of shops of all kinds: jewellers, fashion shops, perfumeries, accessories, shoe shops, decoration, in shops of great quality and careful presentation. Murcia's vocation as a city of shopping is evident in the traditional shops scattered all over the city, but especially in the squares and central streets of the city centre, with a varied and specialised offer, which makes "shopping" in the city a good option for leisure and free time.

What can I take away with me from Murcia?

If we are talking about handicrafts, you should know that in Murcia clay, wood, esparto grass, wicker, iron and cane are traditionally worked. The silk embroidery is famous, as are the gold and silver works.

The good work of the nativity scene masters of the capital is known throughout Spain, in fact 95 out of every 100 nativity scenes sold in Spain are from Murcia, a tradition that began with the famous Murcian sculptor Francisco Salzillo in the 18th century. The district of Puente Tocinos has always been known for the mastery of its craftsmen in the elaboration of carvings for nativity scenes, and is also home to the Casa del Belén, a house-museum located in the Casa Torre del Reloj.

The mastery of Murcia's artisans can be seen in the selected pieces of the Murcia Crafts Centre, located in the heart of the city centre, next to the Jardín del Salitre (also known as the Jardín de la Pólvora). Here we can find nativity scenes from the Region of Murcia, traditional ceramics, modern ceramics, fused glass, carved glass, jarapas, esparto grass, souvenirs, carved wood, sculptures, artistic locksmithery, natural cosmetics, wines, honey, paprika, T-shirts, sunglasses, hand-painted natural silk, paintings, liquors, costume jewellery, jewellery, outlet area, decoration, utensils, personalised works, and even orders for wedding, christening and communion gifts.
